Targeting Behavior: Working with People to Design Education and Communications Strategies for Conservation 1d (11,Jul) 25
Session Organizer: Michael Matarasso

Description: Human development, cultural diversity and social welfare are inextricably linked to the welfare of Earth's natural systems. Ever-increasing environmental degradation is pushing the environmental services that the planet's ecosystems provide out of balance, placing humans in a precarious position. Chapter 36 of Agenda 21 emphasizes that "education is critical for promoting sustainable development and improving capacity of the people to address environment and development issues". The WSSD re-affirmed education¡¯s role in the Millennium Development Goals and by proclaiming the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development. It is clear that education should be one of the driving forces to achieve conservation and sustainable development, however best practice methods to do this effectively are almost non-existent.

Conservation International (CI) has a participatory methodology called Targeting Behavior to design conservation education and social marketing programs that focus on behavior change for rural communities, businesses, government, and the urban masses. A set of participatory tools is used to determine:
* Conservation problems
* Behaviors that are the root cause of these problems,
* Alternatives that can offset these behaviors,
* Barriers that hinder the adoption of alternatives,
* Learning in terms of knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to shift behavior
* Socio-economic and culturally appropriate tools to enable learning that results in measurable and long lasting conservation solutions.
We propose introducing this tested and innovative methodology in a 1-day hands-on course.
