Institute of Zoology

The Institute of Zoology (IOZ), within the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), has a long history. Its predecessor was the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology, established in 1928. Since its establishment, the IOZ has13 CAS academicians and has made many great achievements and contribution to the establishment of national nature reserves, conservation of Chinese ibis and giant panda, control of locusts and rodents, and human contraception, etc.

With the support of CAS Knowledge Innovation Program, the scientific capacity of IOZ has progressed rapidly in past few years. The IOZ has made some important achievements in animal cloning, stem cell, pest control, biological invasion forecast, disease prevention, biodiversity conservation, and the compilation of Fauna Sinica. In the new era, with its efforts to both address basic scientific questions and meet national and public demands in the fields of biodiversity, ecology, agricultural biology, human health and reproductive biology, IOZ will place great emphasis on integrative biology, evolutionary biology, reproductive biology, invasive biology and technological innovations for sustained control of agricultural pests and diseases, as well as public education and scientific popularization. The IOZ aims to focus scientific goals, to reform structures and mechanisms, to establish strong research teams, to strengthen cultural innovation, and to fully promote its creative capacity. It will be established as the state base for zoological research, technical extension, zoologist training and education, and scientific popularization.
